Botswana 2012

Africa does not let us go. This year we were drawn to South Africa and Botswana again. We started in Johannesburg, but on the second day drove over the border to Botswana. Our first goal was the Mabuasehube section in the KTFP. We only saw three vehicles there in the three days - one of them was the ranger. The slopes there are deeply sandy, as is the route from Mabuasehube to Hukuntsi. We drove through the Moremi, Savuti and Linyati area up to the Chobe National Park. Then over Kubu Island to the Nxai Pan and Makgadikgadi Park. Via Khumago and the Khama Rino Sancuary we went back to the South African border. We had one night in Marakele NP, then we went back to Johannesburg.

This trip was very adventurous, starting with the bumpy preparations, we continued through various difficulties with our Toyota Hillux. We had to cope with extreme temperature differences: at night - 10 ° C in the Mabuasehube and 32 ° C in the Chobe NP!

The "streets" were often either dusty, sandy, corrugated iron roads, or peppered with potholes - besides, you had to watch out for cattle, goats, donkeys or wild animals.

BUT: Botswana is uniquely beautiful! Here you are often left to your own devices and feel part of nature. We were always grateful for unique moments that wild animals shared with us. We could see a lion lying in wait for a kudu a few meters away. Hardly anyone is lucky enough to see a whole pack of these rare wild dogs - 5 adult animals and 11 puppies! The population of these animals is estimated at only 2000 animals and they are among the most threatened animals in Africa. Elephants shared the campsite with us at night. We heard lions roar and hippos "sing" at night.

Botswana is pure fascination! Fantastic landscapes with unique wildlife. The starry sky is indescribable! And the people are indeed poor in "goods" but rich in time and humor - I will miss that in Germany, too.

But these photos say more than a thousand words .....
